The Tranzac seeks an organized and dynamic Executive Director passionate about the arts in Toronto. Superior communication, financial management, leadership, team building and problem-solving skills are a must.

Summary

The Tranzac, a multidisciplinary, not-for-profit performing arts organization and venue in downtown Toronto, is seeking a creative and engaged Executive Director to oversee operations and provide leadership.

Description of Executive Director Role

The Tranzac is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to work with us as Executive Director. The Tranzac is dedicated to supporting, presenting, and promoting creative and cultural activity in Toronto through community-priced room rentals, residency programs, and studio and office space rentals. The Tranzac is also an active, licensed bar.

Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director oversees (and manages staff responsible for) a range of strategic, financial, operational, and administrative matters. This includes budgeting and financial reporting, managing cash flow, oversight of residency programs, room rentals, building and technical maintenance and improvements, marketing, and bar operations, among other duties.

The role currently involves 25 hours of work per week (with a possibility of increasing hours by mutual agreement in the future), with the bulk of the working hours ideally spent on site.

Salary: $45 per hour

Responsibilities

Financial Management, Budgeting, and Fundraising:

  • Develop an annual budget and review and monitor the budget once approved;
  • Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board;
  • Work in conjunction with the organization's bookkeepers and accountant to ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed;
  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the cash flow of the organization; oversee procurement and payments (payroll, bill payments, and expenses);
  • Report financial statements to the board on a regular basis;
  • Oversee, manage, and assist in writing grant applications and deadlines;
  • Develop and manage fundraising strategies.

Residency Development and Rental Management:

  • In partnership with the Director of Residency Programming, develop, implement, and supervise residency programs consistent with the organization's objectives and code of conduct;
  • In collaboration with the Rentals Coordinator, ensure that the Tranzac spaces are booked to meet budget expectations and that rentals and events align with the Tranzac's Code of Conduct.

Operations, Staff Leadership and Management:

  • Manage operations staff; recruit, support, supervise and evaluate the dedicated group of Tranzac employees;
  • Ensure internal staff communications are respectful, professional, and timely;
  • Coordinate with the Board's committees for implementation of strategic plans;
  • Manage freelance and independent contractor agreements, including preparing contracts, and oversee payment processing;
  • Works closely with the Bar Manager to ensure bar operations are in line with budgets and cash flow;
  • In collaboration with the Technical Director and Building Maintenance coordinator, address general building maintenance and coordinate with contractors or other repair persons as required;
  • Work with the board to coordinate larger capital investments and upgrades.

Human Resources (HR) and Employee Health and Safety:

  • Work with other employees to ensure applicable health and safety plans, legislated employee training (Occupational Health and Safety, Workplace Violence and Harassment, AODA customer service training, WHMIS) are completed and in accordance with regulatory requirements;
  • Ensure that hiring and employee performance management are conducted in accordance with existing HR policies;
  • Act as the primary point of contact between Tranzac's staff and the board of directors, and conduct regular staff meetings;
  • Oversee the ongoing development and enforcement of the Code of Conduct.

Strategic Planning:

  • Work with the Board to develop and implement the organization's strategic plan and organizational goals;
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report progress on strategic goals.

What are we looking for?

You conduct all business at the highest standard of integrity. You are a dynamic and charismatic team player with proven communication, leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and positively motivate staff, board members, and volunteers. You will foster strong relations with the full range of the Tranzac community, including members, patrons, and artists. You will have at least three years of management experience, preferably in a non-profit organization, with expertise in the arts or a related area.

Desired abilities and experiences include:

  • Knowledge of the local arts community of Toronto, including but not limited to music, theatre, film, comedy, and dance;
  • Experience with financial/statistical management and reporting;
  • Equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (EDIB) training;
  • Safer spaces training;
  • Experience with operating within and executing human resources policies;
  • Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including conflict management and listening skills;
  • Self-directed and motivated;
  • Strong financial, high-level planning, organizational and analytical skills;
  • Innovative, capable of flexible, creative thinking;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and be adaptable in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all communities that call Tranzac home, artists, members, the Board of Directors, and employees

Additional assets:

  • Experience with public relations, marketing, fundraising and grant writing;
  • Experience in building/facilities management, with expertise in an organization that operates AGCO-licensed food and beverage operations;
  • Familiarity with the TRANZAC as a cultural hub.
