Part of the residency Cassiar Records (aka Josh Cole) presents:
Southern Cross
"Formed in 2016, Craig Dunsmuir’s Dun-Dun Band is a genre-defying large ensemble based in Toronto that performs Craig’s intricately constructed compositions, drawing from minimalism, post-rock, free jazz, and the hypnotic rhythmic cycles of North African gnawa music. His music is built on layered repetition, shifting grooves, and interlocking patterns that provide a dynamic foundation for the group's often explosive improvisations.
The 10-piece band features a who’s who of Toronto improvisers: Brodie West, Karen Ng, Colin Fisher, and Ted Crosby on saxophones and clarinets; Craig and Kurt Newman on guitars; Mike Smith on keyboards; Josh Cole on electric bass; Jay Anderson on electronic percussion; and Blake Howard on percussion—each bringing a distinct voice to the ensemble’s dense, polyrhythmic sound.
For July 15th the band will be trimmed down to a 6 piece. Colin Fisher, Ted Crosby, Craig Dunsmuir, Mike Smith, Josh Cole, and Blake Howard

“Cole can be coolly lyrical, he can write a controlled “classical” counterpoint, he can drop in some funk, and he can also let the improvisers loose in the stratosphere.” – Popmatters.com
“To create your own voice in the crowded musical environment of today is a feat.” - Free Jazz Blog
Critically acclaimed bassist, composer, and improviser Josh Cole presents a series of concerts focused on the criminally underrated jazz and improvised music scene in Toronto. Featuring a who’s who of Canadian improvisers—Lina Allemano, John Oswald, Aline Homzy, Nick Fraser, Nick Storring, Blake Howard, the Dun-Dun Band, and more—the concert series will highlight a range of projects Josh Cole has been developing over the last couple of years.
