Humbucker Music with Brian Ruryk

"The fourth and final instalment of Humbucker Music’s residency in the Tranzac’s Southern Cross Lounge features a set from local noise legend, Brian Ruryk. Ruryk has been active since the 80’s, emerging initially from the experimental post punk underground before evolving his practice toward a strange and slapstick collision of elements. Wielding busted guitars, electronics and garbage Ruryk builds surrealist collages in real time while mirroring the musical gestures with volatile and often comedic performances. He tosses his hurls his various implements across the room, rubs and smashes them together, dumps Rubbermaid containers of junk over his head, all the while frantically clawing away at his guitar. His strange and energetic performances are utterly singular and always leave audiences in a state of giddy perplexity.

Humbucker Music, meanwhile, is a new improvising quartet founded by Nick Storring and featuring Mira Martin-Gray, Colin Cudmore, and Jason Doell all of who perform using their namesake—acoustic guitar humbucker pickups—which are used both to amplify and sound a variety of metal objects and instruments. "

Humbucker Music is a new improvising quartet comprising Nick Storring, Mira Martin-Gray, Colin Cudmore, and Jason Doell — some of Toronto's most beloved experimental musicians. The group spontaneously creates a sort of musique concrète, yet without any electronic trickery. Instead, their detailed landscapes of tone and texture are performed live with ferromagnetic instruments and found objects, amplified via their namesake — humbucker pickups, which carry their own, highly unique sonic properties.
