"In this concert, Alejandro will present the new affordances of TimekNot: a digital textual interface for music creation. More specifically, a programming language ideal to improvise with multiple simultaneous tempi, non-conventional tuning systems and experimental methods to treat and generate musical materials.
This live coding performance will focus specifically on the possibilities around Dastgah-based music materiality, how this extends to multi-tempic music paradigms as well as other tuning systems endemic to TimekNot’s ecology.
Joined by Mehrdad Jafari Raad, the duo will present two improvised sets! Don’t be late, as the show will start with a 10 minute presentation of what TimekNot is, what it can become, and what kinds of collaborations might emerge from its development. Ultimately, TimekNot reveals certain biases at the core of electronic music and proposes mechanisms to unbound music creation from such limits.
This will be a unique Makam Nights presentation that explores a deeper and more precise understanding of non-European music systems, and new possibilities revealed by the intersection of musical practice and foreign forms of computation. It will also be Alejandro’s last concert in Canada before he moves - let’s give him a warm send off! "
Makam Nights is an open space dedicated to sharing knowledge of makam music. Each session we will have different musicians join us in discussion and performance, so bring your curiosity, instruments and ideas to share! No limitations to instruments or training, we welcome experimentation and cross-cultural collaboration. This event is pay what you can, with no one turned away for lack of funds.
