Saint Dirt Elementary School held a long-running, open-door residency at the Tranzac, starting in 2001. It launched at a pivotal moment for the club—one that began with a lie. The band said they were a Dixieland group just to get the gig… and then didn’t leave for years.
The nine-piece ensemble became a chaotic, welcoming fixture. Anyone could sit in—and many, many, many did. Bandleader Myk Freedman wrote a new tune every week, building a songbook as launchpad, inviting in the spirits of Ellington, Sun Ra, the klezmer greats, Mancini, and any ghost with a song in its heart.
Now, 24 years later, two of the original minds behind the band return to play—as bumblebees fly—this time in an intimate setting.
